Super Easy Detachable Sofa Ruffle

Welcome to Lazy Day Makeovers! This is my first post and my first DIY blog. Thank goodness I’m in it with my daughter who is a very talented artist and overall creative person. (She get’s it from me.) We hope you enjoy the projects, the good, the fabulous, and, of course, the “What were we thinking!?” Better to read about what doesn’t work than to learn first hand. We would love your feedback and, with that said, here it goes!

I have an Ikea Ektorp sofa with their standard cotton twill slipcover. I like the sofa but wanted to soften the look. I tried throw pillows but they just didn’t so the job. Then I saw a white sofa on Houzz that looked just like mine except it had a ruffled skirt and a pillow back. The cotton twill fabric I found at the store was too stiff to make a soft ruffle and was $34.99 a yard OUCH! I needed at least 2 yards to make one continuous ruffle. I thought I’d have to put the ruffle on the back burner until a trip to Goodwill.

This is the sofa I found online at Houzz.

There I found a heavy white cotton bed-skirt ruffle for $3.99. I love shortcuts!

I removed the ruffle making sure not to break the ruffle stitching. Then I attached several stick-on Velcro dots to the backside of the ruffle and to the sofa. It worked like a charm. (I don’t have small children so I don’t have to worry about it being pulled off but if you do you might try hook & eye.)

My sofa – the ruffle photographed whiter than it is. It actually matches very well.

The bed ruffle makes a great detachable sofa skirt and gives the sofa a softer look. Even though the ruffle is not a twill, you don’t notice the fabric difference. Now I’m ready for a chair ruffle and another trip to Goodwill. This project was fast – under an hour, very easy, and cost under $10.

Let us know what you think and how it goes for you if you give it a try.
